Organized by National Chiayi University and co-organized by the Asia-Pacific Energy Science Education Association, the 2024 Chiayi Cup STEAM+ KidWind Renewable Energy Invitational was successfully held at Chiayi Daye Experimental Junior High School. Open to teachers and students from schools across Chiayi City and County, the event combined competition with educational training, offering a rich and engaging experience.
On the day of the event, Professor Chou Jian-Heng, Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Energy & Science Education Association, delivered an engaging keynote lecture on wind energy, providing participants with an in-depth understanding of the subject. Students demonstrated exceptional enthusiasm for learning and came well-prepared with relevant knowledge. Following the lecture, teams utilized KidWind Renewable Energy Kits to design and modify turbine blades, adjusting variables such as the number, shape, angle, gear ratio, and resistance. These hands-on experiments were conducted in a wind tunnel to measure each team's power generation efficiency. The competitive aspect of the event was both challenging and educational, inspiring students to unleash their creativity and passion for wind energy technology.
The competition was judged by four esteemed experts:Professor Chou Jian-Heng (Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Energy & Science Education Association/Professor at Vanung University), Professor Shih Yu-Si (Department of Mechanical and Energy Engineering, National Chiayi University), Professor Lee Yu-Li (Department of Physics, National Changhua University of Education), Professor Tang Wernhuar (Institute of Learning Sciences and Technologies, National Tsing Hua University). Through their professional evaluations, the judges commended the creativity and technical achievements demonstrated by the students.
This event not only allowed teachers and students in Chiayi to fully experience the wonders of wind energy but also provided them with valuable knowledge and skills through the combination of competition and learning. The students showcased their limitless potential for innovation in wind energy applications, and it is hoped that more participants will join formal competitions in the future to compete alongside top teams nationwide.
A special thanks to the event's convener, Professor Su Chiung-Wu of the Department of Electrophysics at National Chiayi University, for his meticulous planning. His efforts have contributed significantly to the thriving development of renewable energy and STEAM education in Chiayi, inspiring young minds to delve into energy science research and applications.
